Replace your old thermostat with one that is programmable
Have your cooling & cooling system serviced annually
Keep vents clean and clear of furniture

Ducting

Clean or replace furnace filter monthly or according to instructions
Seal leaky ducts and plenums with Mastic

Ensure proper insulation levels
Secure all vertical insulation

Ensure proper attic ventilation

Windows & Doors

Ensure weather stripping at exterior doors has tight seal
Replace single pane windows with low E double pane windows
Use solar screens on windows

Walls

Seal plumbing opening at sinks with expansion foam
Seal around electrical outlets with expansion foam or outlet gaskets
Ensure all exterior walls are insulated

Plumbing

Lower water heater temperature setting to “warm” or 120° F
Install low-flow shower heads
Install faucet aerators
Repair leaky or dripping faucets
Insulate your water heater (tank water heaters only)
Replace old toilets with dual flush toilets
Insulate water lines
Replace your tank water heater with a tankless unit

Electrical

Replace incandescent bulbs with compact florescent bulbs where possible
Use motion sensors to automatically turn off indoor lights when you leave a room
Unplug electronic device chargers when not in use
Plug electronics into a surge protector and turn it off when not in use to avoid “vampire power”

Appliances

Replace electric dryers with gas dryers if you have a gas valve present
Replace your old dishwasher with a modern water conserving unit
Replace your old washing machine with a modern water conserving unit
Refrigerator temperature should be 36-38° F and the freezer should be 0-5° F
Purchase ENERGY STAR appliances
